In the conflict for Bakhmut, Ukrainian forces contend that they are up against a zombie-like army that outnumbers them by a factor of ten to one.

Bakhmut, which was previously a well-liked tourist site, is now in ruins. With its frozen ground broken up by craters and trenches, the region has been levelled by carpet bombing and hollowed down by artillery fire.

Its 80,000 pre-war residents have been reduced to about 7,000 courageous people, most of whom are elderly.
